Dressmaking – Beginners and Continuing

Beginners will learn how to interpret commercial pattern instructions to make a basic garment from woven material.
Continuing students will build on their existing knowledge to make more complex garments using more challenging techniques.
No Concession.

• The course will cover how to interpret pattern instructions and buy appropriate fabric and notions, taking measurements, choosing the correct size, cutting out the garment correctly.
• Beginners will make a basic skirt with facing or waistband and zipper closure.
• Continuing students may choose to make pants, a simple dress or a more advanced skirt design, then move onto lined garments and more advanced techniques.
• All students will learn how to set up and use a basic sewing machine and other dressmaking equipment following WHS standards and will learn problem solving techniques if and when needed.

• Purchasing fabric and notions to make a garment using pattern guidelines.
• Cutting out the garment correctly.
• Sewing garments following directions to an acceptable standard.

Please bring note paper and a pen to the first class. The tutor will advise on the first night about patterns and fabrics to purchase. Materials could cost $50-$80 extra.
